It’s World Book Day week, the best week of the year!

This year World Book Day falls on Thursday 6th March, so there’s plenty of time to get excited about sharing stories, escaping into books and celebrating the crafts that are writing and illustration.

The Rocket Bird crew has one mission: to turn children into booklovers before they’re able to read a single word. We work with the most amazing authors and illustrators to create picture books that live beyond the page. Retold and remembered on bus journeys and woodland walks, these are stories to return to time and time again. They will challenge, entertain and comfort.

This month we publish Brenda’s Revenge, written by Sarah Tagholm and illustrated by Rhian Stone.

Because she’s a cat, Brenda needs help with things like getting dressed, table manners and trampolining!

Brenda is just a cat, so she isn’t good at hairstyles or getting dressed or good table manners… and her handwriting is terrible! Luckily she has one loving owner who is going to help her. Will the little girl who owns Brenda’s ever learn that it isn’t nice to make someone do something they don’t want to? Maybe her new neighbour can help…

You can buy your very own copy of Brenda’s Revenge HERE.

Costume ideas

Lots of young readers are encouraged to celebrate their favourite books by creating costumes, decorating potatoes, or making special hats for World Book Day. Here are a few ideas we have if you’d like to celebrate Rocket Bird Books, perfect for making with your adult helper.

You could dress up like Stevie the slug from Slug Life! Why not make a headband from pipe cleaners or bendy card and wear a green or brown pillowcase as a smock top? Perhaps you could add some strings of cling film to trail behind you like gooey slug slime!

Why not become superstar DJ Sam Francisco from Sam Francisco, King of the Disco? You can download your Sam cat-mask here to cut out, attach it with sole elastic and put on your own favourite party outfit! You can even add a tail from a sock stuffed with newspaper!

If you’re thinking of decorating a potato, how about an Invisible Dog potato? All you need is a large spud and some colourful pens. Then make it into any type of imaginary creature you like! You could add ears / legs / paws / tails made from paper attached with cocktail sticks.
